Sheryl Ann Peyton, 62, of Galatia, ended her earthside journey on May 13, 2023, at home with her loving husband. Sherry was born on May 31, 1960, in Gary, IN. She attended River Forest High School until her sophomore year. In 1976 her family relocated to Galatia where she met her one true love, Kevin Peyton. On May 22, 1977, near the end of Sherry’s Junior year, they were married at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Galatia. Kevin and Sherry were blessed with two daughters, Jennifer and Jill. She followed Kevin’s calling into ministry in 1981, and served next to him faithfully. Sherry attended Southeastern Illinois College, and became a Registered Nurse in 1993. She spent the majority of her career at Egyptian Health Department in Eldorado, IL, where she made lifelong friends. She was first and foremost a Wife, Mom, and Mimi, her passion was creating memories through shared experiences. Sherry was dedicated to community service and served on the founding committee for the Galatia Public Library District, she established the Village Community Church Toiletry Pantry, served as PTO President, was a Mentors 4 Kids Board Member and Mentor, a Board Member of the Southern Illinois HIV Care Consortium and Southern Illinois Regional Effort for AIDS, and a member of the Common Threads Quilt Guild, where she made several Quilts of Honor. During retirement, Sherry cultivated a handmade card ministry that inspired others to be creative and send “Happy Mail” far and wide. She was a 2am friend to many, and a light to many more. She was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Duffee, sister, Sheila Robinson, and brother in-law Michael Peyton. Sherry will be remembered always by her loving husband Kevin, daughters Jennifer (Brad Gall) Peyton and Jillian (Maverick) Marvel, grandchildren Allen Marvel, Wade Romonosky, Ava Marvel, Lindsey Romonosky, and Beau Gall, sister DuWanna Anderson, mother in-law Gloria Etienne, brother in-law Bobbie (Cindie) Etienne, niece Felicia (Kyle) Mortag, great niece Lucy, great nephew Nolan, and her lifelong cousin friends Cheryl Humm, Pamela Lueras, Rhonda Bonner, and Penny Reid.
Kevin, Jennifer, and Jill would like to thank friends and family for the encouragement, flowers, cards, meals, and gifts sent over the last six weeks. We would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of Southern Illinois, and heartfelt gratitude to Debbie Heflin and Cheryl Humm for the support and care they provided during Sherry’s final hours.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Sloan Funeral Home in Galatia, on Friday, May 19, 2023, visitation at 11:00am, and service following at 1:00pm, with the Reverend Mark Finnie officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Village Community Church. Sloan Funeral Home of Galatia in charge of arrangements.
