Louise Mitchell, 84, entered her heavenly home of rest in peace on May 12, 2023. She was a
resident of Diversicare in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Her husband would share that she was from the state of Vermont, he was from the state of
Illinois, and he was only 21 days older. They met in Florida, married in New York, and spent
their first six years of marriage in Ohio where they welcomed their daughter, Belva Mitchell.
They then moved to the Tate/Mitchell farm in the Cornerville area of Galatia, Illinois.
She loved being a wife to Charles, mother to Belva, and homemaker in their remodeled home
(formerly the Cornerville one-room schoolhouse) where she always welcomed company – she
would tell friends and family they did not need an invitation to visit.
She loved the Lord and her church family of the Long Branch Baptist Church in the Hamburg
area. She served as children’s Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school teacher, and
janitor.
The Mitchell in-laws were thought of as parents (Christopher and Belva Tate Mitchell), sisters,
and brothers. She cooked them wonderful meals, hosted Christmas and Thanksgiving Dinners,
and enjoyed sharing her delicious homemade pastries, sweet iced tea, and popcorn. Her gift
was giving her time - taking care of and visiting the elderly and widowed ladies of the community,
and giving away her crocheted afghans and embroidery. She was a caring, loving, beautiful,
and strong-minded lady.
Due to illness, she asked Belva to manage her healthcare which led to residing in Oak Ridge,
TN, for 20 years. She attended and moved her church membership to Oak Ridge Central
Baptist Church and looked forward to the Circle of Friends fellowship. She served at NHC as a
volunteer for Bingo.
Survivors include husband Charles C. Mitchell of Galatia, IL; daughter Belva Mitchell and
grand dogs April and Angel of Oak Ridge, TN; brother Paul (Janice) Rublee of St. Albans, VT;
and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents, Forrest and Margaret
Rublee; sisters Ethel Jones, Lena Johnston, Joan Thompson, and Sandra Allen; grand dogs
Tyson, Monica, and Duffy.
Belva would like to thank the staff at Diversicare and Amedisys hospice for their invaluable,
compassionate care, all who visited and sent cards, and the homebound committee care and
visitors from Central Baptist and other local churches.
Condolences and expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family via the website at
SloanFunderalhome@frontier.com. A celebration of Louise’s new life will be planned and
announced for a later date. Sloan Funeral Home of Galatia in charge of arrangements.
